NASA / ESA’s Hubble Space Telescope recently captured a more vivid image of barred spiral galaxy NGC 1385 located 30 million light-years away in the constellation Fornax. Featuring several arms mixed together and an overall oval shape, while its center glows brightly.

Bright pink patches and filaments of dark red dust can also be seen spread across the center. This more recent image boasts a pinkish-red and umber shades, whereas the former image was dominated by cool blues. This chromatic variation was made in order to represent the different number and type of filters used to collect the data used to make the respective images.

It is understandable to be a bit confused as to how the same galaxy, imaged twice by the same telescope, could be represented so differently in two different images. The reason is that — like all powerful telescopes used by professional astronomers for scientific research — Hubble is equipped with a range of filters,” said the ESA.

Gemini South Telescope Captures Merging Spiral Galaxies, Previews Milky Way and Andromeda Collision

Gemini South Telescope Captures Merging Spiral Galaxies, Previews Milky Way and Andromeda Collision

Gemini South Telescope Merging Spiral Galaxies Milky Way Collision
Astronomers used the Gemini South telescope to capture merging spiral galaxies that resemble cosmic cotton candy of sorts, or more specifically, NGC 7727, a galaxy nestled in the constellation of Aquarius about 90 million light-years from the Milky Way. The Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) mounted on the Gemini South telescope in Chile was used to observe the vast swirling bands of interstellar dust and gas around the merging cores of the progenitor galaxies.

What really stands out about NGC 7727 is its twin galactic nuclei, each of which features a supermassive black hole. Astronomers believe that the galaxy started out as a pair of spiral galaxies that became entangled in a celestial dance approximately 1-billion years ago. It spewed out stars and nebula before they were pulled back together due to the black holes’ gravity, resulting in the image you see here. Eventually, NGC 7727 will become an elliptical galaxy consisting of older stars and very little star formation, just like Messier 87.

Because the galaxy is still reeling from the impact, most of the tendrils we see are ablaze with bright young stars and active stellar nurseries. In fact, about 23 objects found in this system are considered candidates for young globular clusters. These collections of stars often form in areas where star formation is higher than usual and are especially common in interacting galaxies as we see here,” said the NOIRLab.

NASA / ESA’s Hubble Space Telescope captured a dazzling image of the hazy-looking spiral galaxy NGC 941 located approximately 55 million light-years from Earth. This image uses data collected by Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) to study supernova SN 2005ad, which occurred within the galaxy some years ago.

Hubble Spiral Galaxy NGC 941
NGC 941 can be seen here in a face-on orientation from Earth, with the spiral arms of the galaxy shining bright, but somewhat hazily. These arms merge into a swirling disc with a faint halo of dimmer gas around it, while its core glows vibrantly in a lighter color. The two redder visually smaller galaxies and a bright star can also be observed around the galaxy, with more miniature cosmic objects in the background.

So many supernovae are spotted by skilful amateurs such as Itagaki that there is actually an online system set up for reporting them (the Transient Name Server). This is a big help to professional astronomers, because with supernova events time is truly of the essence,” said the ESA.
