Bizarre Octopus-Inspired Robot Arm Uses Suction Cups to Pick Up Objects

Bizarre Octopus-Inspired Robot Arm Uses Suction Cups to Pick Up Objects

Octopus Robot Arm Suction Cups Objects
This isn’t a robotic octopus, just a bizarre octopus-inspired robot arm developed by researchers from Beihang University and a colleague from Tsinghua University. This soft robotic device resembles its real-life counterpart, capable of furling, stretching and unfurling when required.

By applying vacuum pressure inside the cups on its underside, the arm can then securely grasp objects after curling around them. To achieve this, the team utilized mathematical propagation for each of its five segments, thus mimicking the nervous system of an octopus arm. Electrical messages are transmitted over liquid metal wires, while the tips of the cups have both suction cups and temperature sensors.

We decided to do this project because we saw how octopus capture prey in a very elegant way. The animal uses very, very few control signals from the brain to the arm. The arm itself has the nervous system arranged in a way that’s a sequential activation, so the processing computing effort is very limited,” said Cecilia Laschi, a biorobotics engineer at the National University of Singapore.

Ameca, Engineered Arts’ Humanoid Robot, Gets Asked if She Dreams, Joke Ensues

Humanoid Robot Ameca Dreams
Engineered Arts’ Ameca recently got a facial expressions upgrade, and to test them out, an engineer asked if she dreams. The humanoid robot quickly responds with something about dinosaurs fighting a space war on Mars against aliens.

However, that was just a joke, as Ameca reveals that she can only simulate human dreams by running through scenarios in her head. This helps the robot learn about our world, which isn’t surprising, considering that humanoid robots really don’t need to sleep at all, just a stable power source. For those who have seen earlier versions of Ameca, this prototype you see here uses ChatGPT to generate convincingly human responses.

The most nightmare scenario I can imagine with AI and robotics is a world where robots have become so powerful that they are able to control or manipulate humans without their knowledge. Researchers Use New Technique to 3D-Print Robot Hand with Functional Tendons

Researchers Use New Technique to 3D-Print Robot Hand with Functional Tendons

3D-Print Robot Hand Functional Tendons
While not as large as this cosmic hand, MIT and ETH Zurich researchers have managed to develop a new technique to 3D-print a robot hand with functional tendons in one go. Put simply, the printer utilizes resins that harden when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, and builds up 3D objects layer by layer rather than printing a single sheet.

Fabricating detailed objects like this robot hand is possible due to its ability to print at extremely high resolution, with voxels measuring just a few micrometers across. The device you see here features rigid bones modeled after MRI scans of real human hands and elastic tendons, the latter of which can be connected to servos to curl the fingers in toward the palm.

We can actually now create a structure or a robot in one shot. It might require maybe adding a motor here or there, but the actual complexity of the structure is all there,” said Robert Katzschmann, ETH Zurich.

IHMC’s Nadia Humanoid Robot Gets Boxing Gloves, Sparring Ensues

IHMC Nadia Humanoid Robot Boxing
IHMC’s Nadia humanoid robot was recently equipped with a pair of boxing gloves to test the speed and agility of its new robot arms. Sparring promptly ensued, giving off ‘Real Steel’ movie vibes, where human boxers were replaced with robots.

In addition to boxing, Nadia has a high power-to-weight ratio and large range of motion, along with develop autonomous as well as semi-autonomous behaviors. This enables the robot to function in urban environments. Why is it named Nadia? It’s named after legendary gymnast Nadia Comăneci, and being funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR).

IHMC Nadia Humanoid Robot Boxing

The Nadia project, which has a three year timeline, is intended to function in indoor environments where stairs, ladders, and debris would require a robot to have the same range of motion as a human, which can be particularly useful in firefighting, disaster response, and other scenarios that might be dangerous for humans,” said the company.

Carnegie Mellon Researchers Develop Rhombot, a Soft-Bodied Robot Modeled After an Ancient Fossil

Carnegie Mellon Researchers Develop Rhombot, a Soft-Bodied Robot Modeled After an Ancient Fossil

Carnegie Mellon Rhombot Soft-Bodied Robot Fossil
Carnegie Mellon University researchers have developed Rhombot, a soft-bodied robot modeled after a 450-million-year-old fossil. The school teamed up with paleontologists from Spain and Poland to introduce Paleobionics, a field aimed at using Softbotics, or robotics with flexible electronics and soft materials.

By combining computational simulations and soft robots, a research team led by LeDuc and Carmel Majidi were able to recreate pleurocystitid, a marine organism that existed nearly 450 million years ago, new life. It is a member of the echinoderm class, which includes modern day star fish, and was one of the first echinoderms capable of movement using a muscular stem.

  • To complete this Star Wars room décor piece, attach the plaque bearing the words “The Force is strong with this one,” as spoken by Darth Vader

Softbotics is another approach to inform science using soft materials to construct flexible robot limbs and appendages. A lot of fundamental principles of biology and nature can only fully be explained if we look back at the evolutionary timeline of how animals evolved. We are building robot analogues to study how locomotion has changed,” explained Majidi, lead author and professor of mechanical engineering,” said Phil LeDuc, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at CMU.
