NASA Telescope Data Gets Turned Into Music You Can Play, Includes Where Parallel Lines Converge

NASA Telescope Data Music Where Parallel Lines Converge
Composer Sophie Kastner teamed up with researchers to develop versions of NASA telescope data that can actually be played by musicians. This pilot program is currently focusing on a small region at the center of our Milky Way galaxy where a supermassive black hole resides.

Why this region? NASA has telescope data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, Hubble Space Telescope, and now retired Spitzer Space Telescope, which spans about 400 light-years across. Computers then used algorithms to mathematically map the digital data from these telescopes to sounds that humans can perceive. We’d imagine Google’s MusicLM would generate something completely different-sounding if the right text prompt was inputted.

I like to think of it as creating short vignettes of the data, and approaching it almost as if I was writing a film score for the image. I wanted to draw listener’s attention to smaller events in the greater data set,” said Sophie Kastner, a composer and vocalist located in Montreal.

You’ve seen a Bugatti Chiron race a space shuttle, but did you know the CR-990 NASA Tire Assault Vehicle (TAV) is what engineers used to test its tires? It’s based on a remote-controlled 1:16 scale Tamiya Tiger II tank, which included custom-built sides, hull roof, side skirts, and front armor.

The tank turret was replaced with a small camera situated next to a DeWalt drill motor equipped with a 3/8-inch bit, both of which were connected to a Black and Decker battery. A video signal was then transmitted to a portable black-and-white TV. When all was said and done, the entire rig cost NASA less than $3,000 to build.

This is pretty good. I was stationed at Edwards AFB from 1990-1996. I remember doing a test back then. We used our robot and a battery powered MAKITA drill. The understanding was the procedure would relieve the tire of excess pressure after a shuttled landed with hot braking,” said Robert Sims.

NASA Releases Video Showing Two Views of Ingenuity’s 59th Flight on Mars

NASA Releases Video Showing Two Views of Ingenuity’s 59th Flight on Mars

NASA Two Views Ingenuity 59th Fight Mars
NASA has just released a video showing Ingenuity’s 59th flight on Mars, but from two different views. The helicopter achieved its second highest altitude of 66 feet while taking pictures of this 142-second flight that took place on September 16, 2023.

What you’re seeing in this side-by-side video is one perspective from Perseverance on the left, which was captured by the rover’s Mastcam-Z imager from about 180 feet (55 meters) away, while the right side has Ingenuity’s images taken by its Navigation Camera (Navcam). Flight 59 saw Ingenuity hovering at different altitudes to check Martian wind patterns.

Our next-generation Mars helicopter testing has literally had the best of both worlds. Here on Earth, you have all the instrumentation and hands-on immediacy you could hope for while testing new aircraft components. On Mars, you have the real off-world conditions you could never truly re-create here on Earth.” That includes a whisper-thin atmosphere and significantly less gravity than on Earth,” said Teddy Tzanetos, Ingenuity’s project manager and manager for the Mars Sample Recovery Helicopters.

NASA Astronauts Accidentally Drop Tool Bag During Space Walk, Captured on Video

NASA Astronauts Accidentally Drop Tool Bag During Space Walk, Captured on Video

NASA Astronauts Drop Toolbox Space Walk Video
NASA astronauts Jasmin Moghbeli and Loral O’Hara accidentally dropped a toolbox during their first ISS spacewalk this month. They were working on the station’s solar arrays, which track the sun, but they ran out of time to remove and safely stow a communications electronics box, called the Radio Frequency Group.

There wasn’t enough time during the spacewalk to complete the work, so the two astronauts lifted some multilayer insulation to make a better assessment of how to approach the job on a future spacewalk. This was when one tool bag was inadvertently lost.

Flight controllers spotted the tool bag using external station cameras. The tools were not needed for the remainder of the spacewalk. Mission Control analyzed the bag’s trajectory and determined that risk of recontacting the station is low and that the onboard crew and space station are safe with no action required,” said NASA.

NASA Successfully Completes Artemis II Mobile Launcher Water Deluge Test

NASA successfully completed an Artemis II mobile launcher water deluge test on Tuesday (Oct. 24) at the Kennedy Space Center. Why is this important? Well, because 400,000 gallons of water will rush onto the pad during liftoff to help protect the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.

This massive amount of water will also keep the Orion spacecraft, mobile launcher, and launch pad protected from any over-pressurization and dampen the extreme sound produced during ignition as well as liftoff. Artemis II will become the first crewed mission under Artemis and will test all the Orion spacecraft’s systems with astronauts aboard when it launches in November 2024.

Watch Technicians Build the Advanced Upper Stage for the NASA Moon Rocket

Build Advanced Upper Stage NASA Moon Rocket
Watch technicians build the Advanced Upper Stage of the NASA moon rocket, or SLS (Space Launch System), at the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans. More specifically, the fifth of seven weld confidence articles that engineers are manufacturing for the evolved SLS Block 1B configuration of the SLS rocket.

What are weld confidence articles? Engineers use these to verify welding procedures, interfaces between the tooling / hardware, and structural integrity of the welds. The dome-like liquid oxygen tank weld confidence article was first welded to its structural ring at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, using friction stir welding tooling.

Build Advanced Upper Stage NASA Moon Rocket

NASA is working to land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon under Artemis. SLS is part of NASA’s backbone for deep space exploration, along with Orion and the Gateway in orbit around the Moon, and commercial human landing systems. SLS is the only rocket that can send Orion, astronauts, and supplies to the Moon in a single mission,” said the agency.
