Ameca, Engineered Arts’ Humanoid Robot, Gets Asked if She Dreams, Joke Ensues

Humanoid Robot Ameca Dreams
Engineered Arts’ Ameca recently got a facial expressions upgrade, and to test them out, an engineer asked if she dreams. The humanoid robot quickly responds with something about dinosaurs fighting a space war on Mars against aliens.

However, that was just a joke, as Ameca reveals that she can only simulate human dreams by running through scenarios in her head. This helps the robot learn about our world, which isn’t surprising, considering that humanoid robots really don’t need to sleep at all, just a stable power source. For those who have seen earlier versions of Ameca, this prototype you see here uses ChatGPT to generate convincingly human responses.

The most nightmare scenario I can imagine with AI and robotics is a world where robots have become so powerful that they are able to control or manipulate humans without their knowledge. We should take steps now to ensure that these technologies are used responsibly in order to avoid any negative consequences in the future,” said Ameca at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation symposium.

SpaceX Second Starship Flight Test Explosion
SpaceX completed their second Starship flight test, but an explosion ensued shortly after. More specifically, the Super Heavy booster exploded, while the upper-stage of Starship detonated before reaching its target altitude in a rapid unscheduled disassembly.

Starship, along with its 33 Raptor engines, and the Super Heavy booster launched at 8 a.m. EDT from SpaceX’s Starbase test and manufacturing facility in Boca Chica. The Starship stage separation happened at approximately 2 minutes, 41 seconds after liftoff, and everything went to plan, that is until the Super Heavy booster exploded.

What we do believe right now is that the automated flight termination system on second stage appears to have triggered very late in the burn, as we were headed downrange out over the Gulf of Mexico,” said John Insprucker, SpaceX’s Principal Integration Engineer.

IHMC Nadia Humanoid Robot Boxing
IHMC’s Nadia humanoid robot was recently equipped with a pair of boxing gloves to test the speed and agility of its new robot arms. Sparring promptly ensued, giving off ‘Real Steel’ movie vibes, where human boxers were replaced with robots.

In addition to boxing, Nadia has a high power-to-weight ratio and large range of motion, along with develop autonomous as well as semi-autonomous behaviors. This enables the robot to function in urban environments. Why is it named Nadia? It’s named after legendary gymnast Nadia Comăneci, and being funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR).

The Nadia project, which has a three year timeline, is intended to function in indoor environments where stairs, ladders, and debris would require a robot to have the same range of motion as a human, which can be particularly useful in firefighting, disaster response, and other scenarios that might be dangerous for humans,” said the company.

Super Mario 64 Gets Ported to Meta Quest 3, Mixed Reality Level Ensues

Super Mario 64 Gets Ported to Meta Quest 3, Mixed Reality Level Ensues

Super Mario 64 Meta Quest 3 Mixed Reality
The Apple TV port of Super Mario 64 is fun, but what would a Meta Quest 3 version be like? Llbsidezll couldn’t wait for an official version, so they programmed their own by utilizing Virtual Desktop’s passthrough feature, which basically displays the user’s computer monitor in a three-dimensional virtual space, along with Blender’s built-in VR support.

Since Virtual Desktop’s Passthrough allows you to see a real-time view of your surroundings while in VR, all Llbsidezll had to do was use Blender to place Super Mario 64 sprites in mixed reality. The end result is a level you’d expect to see in a mixed reality Super Mario Bros. game, and all that it needs now are a few more power-ups as well as Bowser.

Super Mario 64 Meta Quest 3 Mixed Reality
Super Mario 64 was originally released in Japan on June 23, 1996 and went on to sell 11.91 million units, making it the best selling N64 game of all-time. Many developers believe it greatly influenced 3D platform games, thanks to its dynamic camera system and 360-degree analog control, both of which helped establish a new archetype for the genre.
