Princeton University’s Big Bird Electric Boat Hits 114.20MPH, Becomes World’s Fastest

Princeton Big Bird Electric Boat Speed Record Fastest
Princeton University’s Big Bird electric boat hit an average speed of 114.20mph during its latest attempt, become the world’s fastest. The boat was originally designed to house a 700cc or 1100cc outboard motor, but instead comes equipped with a three-phase AC permanent magnet motor, powered by a 400-volt battery pack.



The 400-volt battery pack has an energy capacity of 24 kWh and helps the 975-pound electric boat generate in excess of 200 horsepower. Big Bird was piloted by John Peeters, a 60-time world and national record-holder hydroplane driver, on Lake Townsend near Greensboro, North Carolina.

Electric boating in general is growing at a rapid pace and it’s awesome to be part of the industry. Furthermore, there is a large effort for more electric race boats, with talk of nearly a dozen 100-plus-mph [161-km/h] electric boats by the end of 2024,” said Edric Zhang, Princeton Student and Big Bird Team Member to New Atlas.

Lockheed Martin Awarded Contract to Develop Nuclear Electric Spacecraft for JETSON Program

Lockheed Martin was awarded $33.7 million from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to develop a nuclear electric spacecraft for the Joint Emergent Technology Supplying On-Orbit Nuclear (JETSON) High Power program. The latter is currently in a preliminary design review stage, with the option to go to critical design review level.

This spacecraft will make use of a fission reactor that generates heat, which is then transferred to Stirling engines to produce between 6 kWe and 20 kWe of electricity, or four times the power of traditional solar arrays without the need to be in continuous sunlight. Eventually, this technology will have the potential to produce a greater electrical output than spacecraft powered by solar panels, making it perfect for deep space missions.

Joby Aviation’s electric air taxi successfully performed an exhibition flight around New York City yesterday, marking the first time ever that it has flown in an urban setting. This eVTOL was engineered to have a dramatically lower acoustic footprint than today’s helicopters, allowing it to operate in densely populated areas.



This 4,000 pound aircraft has a top speed of over 200-mph (322-km/h) and around a 150-mile (241-km) range when fully charged. So far, Joby has flown more than 30,000 miles with its full-scale prototype eVTOL aircraft, starting in 2017. Its first eVTOL aircraft rolled off its Pilot Production Plant in Marina, California earlier this year and commercial passenger service is expected to begin in 2025.

UNSW Sydney’s Sunswift 7 is currently the world’s fastest solar electric car over 1000km and NVIDIA Jetson AI helps give it an edge across its 100 automotive monitoring / power management systems. It recently won the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge (Cruiser Class) from Darwin to Adelaide.



NVIDIA Jetson AI can also determine whether it should drive faster or slower based on weather forecasts. For example, Sunswift 7 will alert the driver to go faster if rain is expected later in the day when conditions would force the car to slow down. The team built nearly 60 design iterations to improve the vehicle’s aerodynamics, using computational fluid dynamics modeling and simulations to analyze each version.

Sure, there’s an F1 wheel hoverboard, but the inventor of the original, Shane Chen, unveils his latest creation: SHANE. This unusual two-wheeled electric car is touted to be practical and efficient for everyday urban as well as highway use.



For maximum stability, SHANE essentially has a shifting center of gravity relative to its wheels to counter the torque generated by driving, thus making the vehicle as safe as its four-wheeled counterparts. Two wheel differential speed control make maneuverability and parking a breeze. Its large wheels minimize rolling resistance while in-wheel regenerative shocks conserve damping energy to recharge the battery. There’s no word yet on if or when we’ll see a functional prototype.

NASA’s Advanced Electric Propulsion System (AEPS) gave off an eerie blue hue during its latest test inside a vacuum chamber at the Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. This 12-kilowatt Hall thruster is currently the most powerful electric propulsion thruster in production, and will eventually be used by NASA for missions to the Moon and beyond.

What is causing the blue plume? Scientifically speaking, the blue plume is actually a steady stream of ionized xenon gas ejected to produce a low, yet highly efficient, thrust. If a spacecraft were to be equipped with AEPS, it theoretically could accelerate spacecraft to extremely high speeds over time using only a fraction of the fuel chemical propulsion systems require, making it perfect for deep space exploration.
