First Look at CinePI, an Open-Source Raspberry Pi Cinema Camera

First Look at CinePI, an Open-Source Raspberry Pi Cinema Camera

CinePi Open-Source Raspberry Pi Cinema Camera
Here’s a first look at CinePI, an open-source Raspberry Pi cinema camera that could potentially be used to make award winning films. It consists of a 3D-printed enclosure, a Raspberry Pi 4 board with a 12.3MP Sony IMX477 HQ camera module, a 4.0-inch touchscreen display, a Zero2Go power supply (4 x 18650 cells), and a Notcua fan.

Putting CinePI V2 together is mostly straightforward using common tools such as a screwdriver, side cutters, wire strippers, etc., but access to a soldering iron will be required to perform hardware modifications to some of the off the shelf components. However, depending on the parts you choose in your build, soldering may be avoided altogether. Get the instructions here.

What Earth Looks Like from Space, as Captured by Tiny 2mm Coin-Sized Camera Lens

Earth from Space 2mm Camera Lens Trisat-R CubeSat
Ever wonder what Earth looks like from space, as captured by a nanosatellite? If so, the European Space Agency (ESA) will show you just that, as the image above was snapped by a tiny 2mm coin-sized camera lens on the TRISAT-R CubeSat from Slovenia.

The shoebox-sized TRISAT-R CubeSat was made from three standardized 10-cm boxes and marks Slovenia’s second space mission. This nanosatellite flew on Europe’s inaugural Vega-C launch last year to medium-Earth orbit, at 6000 km (3728 mi) up. Its orbital path took it right through the heart of the ionosphere, which is an electrically active layer of Earth’s atmospherem as well as the inner Van Allen radiation belt.

The resulting picture of Earth is very low resolution as these highly miniaturized cameras were not intended to perform terrestrial imaging, plus TRISAT-R satellite employs magnetorquers for its attitude control, so that precision pointing is difficult to achieve. Our main interest has been in capturing examples of the ‘Black Sun effect’ – commonplace in terrestrial digital imaging, where over-saturation of pixels can cause very bright areas to appear dark. We have succeeded in these investigations, but have also been lucky enough to acquire images like these,” said Dr. Kramberger, Project Manager from the Iztok Kramberger of the University of Maribor.

Astronauts recently put the ESA’s Handheld Universal Lunar Camera (HULC) to the test in the lunar-like landscapes of Lanzarote, Spain, as part of the PANGAEA training program. The latter aims to prepare astronauts to become effective field scientists for future missions to the lunar surface, including NASA’s Artemis III, which will land on the South Pole of the Moon.

During the Apollo 11 mission, astronauts captured images of the Moon with a standalone, mechanical Hasselblad camera sporting a Harrison Schmidt 60 mm lens. A total of four Hasselblad cameras used by the astronauts collected 1407 photos of the Moon. This updated version keeps the same core of the camera, but adds an updated interface and housing. A prototype is set to fly to the International Space Station for additional testing in the near future.
