When someone orders an iPhone 15 Pro Max directly from Apple UK, the last thing they’d expect to receive is a knockoff, but that is exactly what happened to one Reddit user. After opening the box, a screen protector was discovered to already installed on the handset, which could mean it was a return or refurbished unit.

There were two other things that stood out, with the first being a non-OLED screen and the strange ‘chin’ at the bottom. One the device was turned on, he was greeted with a setup process reminiscent of those found on Android devices. Skipping past that setup process, Edmard found Facebook, Youtube and Tiktok already installed. Some theorize that an employee at a distribution center may have swapped out the original box with this fake device even before it reached the courier, with all original shipping labels intact.

MIT physicists have successfully turned pencil lead into gold by isolating five ultrathin flakes in a specific order. The researchers were then able to tune the resulting material to exhibit three important properties never before seen in natural graphite.

Pencil lead, or graphite, is composed of graphene, which is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in hexagons resembling a honeycomb structure. The team found that five layers of graphene arranged in a specific order allow the electrons moving around inside the material to talk with each other, a phenomenon known as electron correlation.

Joby Electric Air Taxi Flies Around New York City, One of the Company’s Launch Markets

Joby Aviation’s electric air taxi successfully performed an exhibition flight around New York City yesterday, marking the first time ever that it has flown in an urban setting. This eVTOL was engineered to have a dramatically lower acoustic footprint than today’s helicopters, allowing it to operate in densely populated areas.

This 4,000 pound aircraft has a top speed of over 200-mph (322-km/h) and around a 150-mile (241-km) range when fully charged. So far, Joby has flown more than 30,000 miles with its full-scale prototype eVTOL aircraft, starting in 2017. Its first eVTOL aircraft rolled off its Pilot Production Plant in Marina, California earlier this year and commercial passenger service is expected to begin in 2025.

MIT researchers unveil FibeRobo, a shape-shifting, morphable fabric that contracts in response to an increase in temperature, then self-reverses when the temperature decreases. There are no embedded sensors or other hard components required.

In a real world application, FibeRobo could be used in outerwear like a jacket that would dynamically change shape so it becomes more insulating to keep you warm when temperatures drop. Companies could also combine the fiber with conductive thread, which acts as a heating element when electric current runs through it. This allows the fabric to change shape depending on digital information like a heart rate sensor.
