Atari Pong was released on this day (November 29) in 1972 and some may not know that the game was developed by engineer Allan Alcorn as a training exercise assigned to him by company co-founder Nolan Bushnell. Ted Dabney, the second Atari co-founder, was so surprised by the quality of Alcorn’s work that he decided to manufacture the game for release in arcades.

This two-dimensional game essentially simulates table tennis, where the player controls an in-game paddle by moving it vertically across the left or right side of the screen. A second player controls a paddle on the opposing side and the goal is to reach eleven points before their opponent. Points are gained when one fails to return the ball to the other, similar to other electronic tennis games that Bushnell had played before developing Pong.

Atari Pong Released November 29 1972 Retrospective
Bushnell and Alcorn installed the Pong prototype at Andy Capp’s Tavern during August 1972 near the bar’s other entertainment machines: a jukebox, pinball machines, as well as Computer Space. After seeing its success, Bushnell embarked on a business trip to Chicago to demonstrate Pong to executives at Bally and Midway Manufacturing. Ultimately, it was decided that the game would be more profit for Atari to manufacture rather than license.

Insta360 X2 Action Cameras Captured This Amazing 360-Degree View of Earth from Space

Insta360 X2 Action Camera Earth from Space
At the beginning of this year, two Insta360 X2 action cameras were launched into space aboard a solar-powered satellite and both are now orbiting the planet, capturing incredible 360° views of the stars, the Milky Way, and Earth. This is officially the first time ever a 360° action camera has reached outer space.

To make this achievement possible, Insta360 collaborated with Media Storm and SAR satellite company Spacety. It took approximately 12 months to modify the action cameras, including six months of R&D. One important modification was making the casing as well as internals capable of withstanding extreme heat and cold. Since the satellite circles the globe every 90 minutes, temperatures range between -94°F and 122°F (-70°C and 50°C).

Insta360 is no stranger to attaching its action cameras in unconventional ways. In 2022, falconry expert Paul Kilma mounted Insta360 RS to an eagle for a unique birds-eye view. This year, Karman Space attached Insta360 X3 to their Eclipse weather balloon and sent it 86,000ft (26km) into the stratosphere. This time, it was X2’s turn to venture further into space,” said the company.

Diablo 2 Durance of Hate Unreal Engine 5 Remake
Diablo 2 was released back in 2000, so it’s long overdue for a refresh, and that is why 3D environment artist Michal Wawruch used Unreal Engine 5 to create this ‘Durance of Hate’ remake. For those unfamiliar with the game, Durance of Hate is basically the lair of the Lord of Hatred, Mephisto and can be accessed by destroying the Compelling Orb in Travincal.

Don’t expect a remake of the full game, as Wawruch made this playable demo just for fun, as well as to develop workflow with Unreal Engine 5’s Nanite and Lumen. With that said, Diablo 2 was one of the most popular games of 2000 and has been touted as one of the greatest games of all time by those in the industry. Download it here now.

Grand Theft Auto The Trilogy Definitive Edition Netflix
Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is coming to Netflix on December 14th and will be available on the Apple App Store, Google Play as well as in the Netflix mobile app. Starting today, subscribers will be able to pre-register to download Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, each updated for mobile.

GTA 3 is where it all began, with a massive open world, a wild cast of characters from every walk of life, and the freedom to explore at will. Vice City takes you back to the 1980s and follows Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town. San Andreas transports players to the early 90s where Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson is framed and forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state to save his family and to take control of the streets. App store link here.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition adds to a growing catalog of more than 80 mobile games, with must-play titles across all genres adding further value to all Netflix memberships — including through one of the most iconic series in history, without any ads, in-app purchases, or extra fees,” said Netflix.

NASA’s 2001 Mars Odyssey Orbiter Captures Unusual View of Red Planet’s Horizon

NASA 2001 Mars Odyssey Orbiter Horizon
NASA’s 2001 Mars Odyssey orbiter captured this unusual view of the Red Planet’s horizon using its THEMIS camera from an altitude of around 250 miles (400 kilometers), or the same altitude at which the ISS orbits Earth.

It was challenging to capture because its Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) is not able pivot, while adjusting the angle of the camera requires changing the position of the entire spacecraft. This meant the team needed to rotate the orbiter almost 90° while making sure the Sun would still shine on the spacecraft’s solar panels, but not on sensitive equipment that could overheat.

Incredible ‘Sequences’ Time-Lapse Video Took 10-Years and 3.5-Million Photos to Complete

Sequences Time-Lapse Video Jack Fisher
H/t: Peta Pixel
Photographer Jack Fisher shot countless time-lapse videos with his Canon 5D Mark IV camera, so it only made sense to turn the 3.5-million photos into an incredible ‘Sequences’ short film. The production company he works for makes after-movies for the Ultra Music Festival, so he travels extensively.

Just how much has Fisher traveled in just the last couple of years? Around 24,250 minutes of air travel with just one airline alone. He has shot festivals like Lollapalooza in Chicago, the Djakarta warehouse project in Indonesia, and EDC in Las Vegas. One thing he’s working on now is using AI software to do a lot of the more time-intensive post-production associated with time-lapse photography.
